The pier was constructed at the time of the second canal.
The outer range lighthouse was built c. 1879. The inner range lighthouse was constructed c. 1898 to replace an older one destroyed by lightening.
The N.S. & T electric rail line was extended to Port Dalhousie and Lakeside Park in 1901. Lakeside Park was run jointly beginning in 1920s by Canadian National Railway and the Niagara St. Catharines & Thorold Railway. The line terminated at the wharf.
A few years after the completion of the 2nd Welland Canal, W.H. Merritt established “The Welland Canal & St. Catharines Gas Co.,” which manufactured gas from coal for both the city and the canal. The plant was located in what later became Centennial Gardens. With the coming of gas the fully lighted canal could be used 24 hours a day.
