Butler’s Barracks, which was later renamed Camp Niagara, began as a training camp for regular and militia military units. Canadians serving in the Boer War, WWI, WWII, and the Korean War trained here. The hospital at Camp Niagara was built in 1915.

Camp Niagara closed after WWII but re-opened in 1953 as a militia training area. During this time the camp returned to using its original name, Butler’s Barracks. The camp closed permanently in 1967 and was designated a National Historic Site.
