St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church was built in 1867 in order to establish a mission in West St. Catharines. By 1885 the mission had grown into a parish church.
As the Western Hill area of St. Catharines continued to develop and grow a larger church was needed to accommodate the expanding population. The new church for the congregation of St. Mary of the Assumption officially opened for worship in Feb. 1914.
