Construction began on the 3rd Welland Canal in 1872. The canal opened for traffic in 1881 with modifications being made until 1887.

“Lakers” are bulk cargo ships specifically constructed to navigate the canals and operate under the weather, fresh water, and ice conditions of the Great Lakes.
