The statue commemorates William Hamilton Merritt, 1793-1862. He was one of the first settlers on the site of St. Catharines. Considered a pioneer in transportation, Merritt was primarily responsible for the construction of the 1st Welland Canal, 1824-1829. The statue is located in Memorial Park.
