The church began in the early 1830's as St. James, in what was then Louth Township. The original church was a small wood frame building. The congregation decided to build a larger church closer to the centre of Port Dalhousie and a new church, renamed St. John's, opened in August 1869. The church was extended in 1912 with the addition of a parish hall.
