Seen here is the original Windsor Chase Residence converted to hospital and nurses home which opened in 1876.
The General and Marine Hospital opened in 1865 with the purpose of tending to residents of St. Catharines and sailors on the Welland Canal. The hospital initially opened on Cherry Street, however space restrictions forced the hospital to move to a house on Hainer Street. In 1870, the hospital moved again after the Windsor Chase Home on Queenston Street was purchased. The growing hospital soon expanded with additions being added in 1874, 1896 and 1911. The present image may show 1896 addition.
The Nurses home opened in 1876. When the Leonard Nurses' Home was built in 1925, it was torn down. - Inscriptions
