The 1st parish church was built in 1834 but it was destroyed by fire in 1842. Construction on a new church began in 1843 and it opened for worship on June 10th, 1845. An east wing was added in 1859 and another addition, a west wing, was added in 1870, which completed the church.

In 1958 the St. Catherine of Alexandria church was named the cathedral of the Roman Catholic diocese of St. Catharines.
