Age 70 years; Born in County Down, Ireland in 1832. Settled in Chicago in 1855.; Came to St. Catharines in 1857 and entered in a partnership wit his brother William J.The firm was known as W.J. & J. McCalla and existed until 1868.; In 1863 he married Miss Mary Drysdale, daughter of Matthew Drysdale, Esq. of Dublin; Prominently identified with the Presbyterian Church; Two sisters survived him: Mrs. Samuel Irvine of California, and Mrs. Samuel thompson of St. Catharines; He also had an adopted daughter, Mrs. J.L. Cameron of Yuma, Colorado
